Run a gasoline engine on ethanol fuel

We program gasoline engines to run on E85 ethanol fuel. Just as for 98/99 octane, the ignition maps are adjusted to use the capacity of E85, which corresponds to about 104 octane.

Since E85 requires 38% more flow to reach the same lambda value as gasoline, the original injectors are often not enough. Larger injectors are then needed, which we scale and map into the software.

E85 has its “stoich” value, where lambda is 1, at 9.7 compared with 14.7 for gasoline. This means a larger amount of fuel than with gasoline is needed to reach lambda 1.

When converting a gasoline engine to E85, the cold-start maps are also optimized for E85 so that the engine starts normally when cold, even in colder temperatures.

Apart from the performance benefits, the price difference between E85 and gasoline can be large in some countries, which makes it possible to save money. The price difference needs to be about 30%, as it is reasonable to expect the engine to use about 30% more fuel on E85.
